I always knew those Russells from Madera were pretty special people. They descended from Agusto and Mary Russell who immigrated from the Azores in 1900. Later their children found their way to Madera, and made their mark here. So did their grandchildren.
I could write volumes about this family, but I want to focus on one descendant of Agusto and Mary. His name is Jordan Scott, and he is a great grandson of these Portuguese immigrants. He is only 23, but he is a hero. Just ask his dad, Roger, who is the son of Isabel Russell Schoener, the youngest of child of Agusto and Mary.
Last week, Jordan gave up one of his kidneys to save his dad’s life, which came as a surprise to no one. The two did so many things together. They were avid fishing buddies. The dad taught the son all he knew about basketball, classic cars, and landscaping. They were together constantly.
Then in 2005, when Jordan was just 15 years old, his mom and dad sat him down and told him the bad news. The doctors had discovered that Roger had IGA Nephropathy, a hereditary kidney disease that is found primarily in males. By the time the symptoms of the disease appeared in Roger, he was already moving toward total kidney failure...
