I love the comics pages. They were part of how I learned to read using the newspaper. We lived out in the country and my parents subscribed to the Tribune and the Fresno Bee throughout my childhood.

My birthday is next week. When my parents were alive, birthdays were a big deal. Every year I got a Halloween birthday party as a kid, which explains why I believe I own Halloween.
It is mine.
October has finally arrived. Pumpkins, goblins, ghosts and witches are everywhere. Halloween is just 27 days away and I can feel it in the air.
Or is it something else?
Today at 10 a.m. is the Old Timers Day Parade. The parade begins at the National Guard Armory on Yosemite Avenue and proceeds west to Courthouse Park.
Tomorrow is the Odd Fellow Rebekah lodges monthly pancake breakfast, 7:30 to 11 a.m., 14862 Road 29. Cost is $6 for eggs, pancakes, ham or sausage and beverages.
This week marked the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on America. Fred and I were getting ready for work when the television morning news made the announcement.
The first weekend of the month means it is Madera yard sale weekend. If we are lucky this time next month the drought will have broken and El Nino will have blessed us with an enormous rainstorm.
